2019 Spring Update
We thought it was time we introduced ourselves properly and let you know how we are getting on after our first few months in the job!
We are Jenny and Emma and have been the best of friends for over 10 years. We met playing tennis and were long standing partners on the court before deciding to go into business together last November.
We now know each other very well and I think we would both say that neither of us would be able to do this without the support of the other!!
The idea to open our dress agency was launched after a visit to a preloved boutique in France. The French have such exquisite taste and style and this is something we have tried to aspire to when establishing Vintage & Vogue. We are based in a lovely, private garden studio and take pleasure in welcoming guests on Open Days with a glass of local sparkling wine. Fresh flowers, candles and music also help to create the ambiance we are looking for. The clothes and accessories that we offer for sale are all preloved, but we specialise in taking in a wide range of high quality designer brands and every piece is in excellent condition. Vintage clothes are also something that we like to offer, as they are great talking points and a little bit different to anything you might currently find on the high street. Prices are very competitive and we hope that we offer our customers an excellent shopping experience. It certainly gives us great pleasure to help ladies find a preloved piece that really works for them.
The downside of not being on the High Street, however, means that we are having to work extremely hard to raise awareness for our business. Daily Instagram posts are a must and we are due to be featured in next months Buckinghamshire Living magazine. We are also doing local popup events and will be taking a shop in Market Walk in Old Amersham in the first week of April, which will certainly help to promote us in the local community. It is also worth mentioning that the help that we have received from other local business women has been excellent and it is great to feel part of such a supportive network. We encourage new visitors who have enjoyed shopping with us to bring a friend next time they pop in and we are always delighted to host an evening event for a group of ladies. Although in some ways it would be easier to be in a traditional retail space, we love having the flexibility of being able to choose when we work and we are of course free from the burden of enormous overheads.
As far as selling trends are concerned, we have found that coats and jackets are extremely popular and designer bags are something we can never have enough of! We are looking increasingly at moving away from stocking too many formal pieces and trying instead to offer a range of clothes that can be dressed up or down to give maximum flexibility and value for money. We are also acutely aware that we need to offer a good range of sizes and price points. We have actually found it relatively easy so far to source clothing as there are many lovely ladies in the Buckinghamshire area who have wardrobes bursting with gorgeous pieces. We sell their items on a 50/50 commission basis and take great pleasure in reporting back to them when pieces have sold.
So, is it hard work? Yes it really is. But is it fun? Absolutely! Such a great feeling to follow a dream and see that with enough effort and a little bit of luck, Vintage & Vogue can definitely be a successful business. We will be back with another update in a few months to let you know how things are progressing. Thanks for reading and following our journey so far. Do get in touch if you are interested in visiting us, we would love to show you around!
Jenny & Emma.
